They are telling the US you may be a superpower but we are not under your thumb and will not jump to your demands.

We aren't asking them to jump to our demands we just don't want them to oppose us. They don't have to be part of any attack on Iraq.

That's not true. We want NATO's participation and we want their help with the costs of the war and the nation building afterwards.
