She was competent. Why did she not take responsibility for her own suicide and give the controlling authority the bird on the way out? Why is it necessary to involve another in violating the law of self preservation?

The problem with that is the window of opportunity. For this woman as for every adult, there is a period of time where one realizes that one is dying and still has the ability to get the job done oneself. You are in that window as am I. But our deaths are not imminent. We do not yet know the time or nature of our deaths. Should we do the job now rather than risk driving to the supermarket later today and getting into an accident that incapacitates us such that we can no longer do the job? Of course not. That would be just plain dumb. As well as being very disrespectful of the sanctity of life.

This woman received a diagnosis. She knew her prospects. But it takes some time to internalize that, to come to accept that one will not return to health, to learn just how much pain one can take, to search ones soul for that threshold for when life is no longer worth living, to come to terms with what one must do about it. That process takes a while. Surely you don't want people to act precipitously just to obviate the possibility that the window of opportunity will close on them? That's the dilemma. Do it now while you still can? Or wait and risk not having the wherewithal to do it?

IMO, it's clearly better to wait until you're sure there are no other options. What I've been advocating is allowing that person the dignity and the respect for life to wait without having to risk a loved one going to jail for an act of love and kindness.

And you quit running those stop signs, ya hear?
