The J in JDAMS was joint. Needed the ground lasers. Now that's past.

Ok Ish... not to get nit-picky.. but the "J" in JDAMS represented the fact that it was developed as both a Air Force and Navy weapon..

IOW, a "joint" research and developemnt program..

Now, as to initially having a laser guidance seeker, I guess I'm from Missouri... Y'see.. those seekers go up front on the nose section, while the JDAMs package goes on the tail assembly..

Also, the laser guided bomb is MORE accurate than the JDAMs. However, it is not all-weather and clouds can obscure the laser beam from the seeker on the bomb.. A JDAMS is all weather and could care less if it's clear or cloudy..
