Hi D. Long; Re: "Wrong, Carl. You're assuming we're wrong, and they're right."
No, you missed the point of my allegory. Even if you assume that you're the one that always knows best, and that you're the one that is as pure in deed and as noble in motive as Jesus Christ, if you try to use naked force to get what you want, you will still end up sleeping alone on the couch.
Humans by their nature are not 100% rational. Even if you make the wild jump of assuming that your own thought processes are perfectly rational (and therefore probably not human), you cannot make this assumption about other people. But the fact is that you must take into account their beliefs whether you agree with them or not.
Maybe we can agree that abortion is wrong and that doctors that perform it are unpunished murderers. We can convince ourselves that this is true, and we can even go around and kill a few doctors. In our hearts we know that we are right and they are wrong, but they still hunt us down and put us in jail.
Alternatively, maybe we can agree that abortion is every woman's right, and that we should become heroes and become abortion doctors. We can convince ourselves that we are right, but when the "pro life" nut cases shoot us down we will still bleed.
You do not live in a world of rational actors. What you live in, is a world filled with fools with guns. This is a fact that you already take into account constantly in your personal life.
