intelligent policy
Intelligent policy? You use that in regard to a collection of the opinions of a bunch of 10th-rate tinhorn dictators?

I have not said that consensus must always prevail
Yes you have. The US wants to tell the consensus up which orifice it may shove its opinion and you object to that.

If we DO have 1/2 % of the world population (and 1 out of 200 seems high to me), then YOU must have almost 4 % of the world's population? Not a great basis for arrogance, IMO!!
Why not look at it in terms of GNP? BOTH countries will suddenly look more significant on that basis.

Canadian GDP $875B
US GDP: $10T
World: $47T
cia.gov

SO the US has about 20% of world product and Canada has about 2%. Considering Canada has only 1/2 % of population, that ain't bad.

1/2 %? 200 X 30M = 6B. What's wrong with that?

If people can work together with a common efort it will be a far better solution than if the coalition is fragmented.
THe coalition IS fragmented! THAT'S the problem!

You guys better hope you got this right. The consequences of a mistake could be disasterous. Your lovely UN stands a good chance of being shown up for the farce it is.

It is a collection of frightened nations surrounded by intrigue and continual danger
The European Community was in existence then.

Frightened? Frightened? If countries like France, Germany, and Britain can be scared off by a bunch of banditoes running around the hills of Yugoslavia, then the US really should forget about the UN and NATO. Cowards like that aren't worth having as allies.

(from amongst others, the long arm of the US).
Again, cut the crap. Just when, since WW2, has the US threatened invasion of Europe? Probably about the last time we threatened Canada, right?

The unification of Nations is allowing us to "interfere" in genocide and other wars, which when done independently would be simple aggression and a temptation to pillage, land grabbing, and such.
The logic here appears to me to be this:
Rescuing My Fair Lady is criminal kidnapping if done alone.
If done by a teenage gang, it's laudable.

How about: It's right or it's wrong. Period.

They speak with a lot of logic. And their arguments are sensible to many Americans--probably to many of your friends...and to many people outside of America.
Why bother with a mutual defense treaties if the other parties back out when needed?

Kick France, Germany, and Belgium out and let's have an alliance worth having.

Turkey is not being attacked.
What was asked for was preparation for the defense of Turkey in the event it is attacked by Iraq. That will limit the extent of any aggressive move Iraq can make into Turkey. Turkey has been a member of the alliance for many, many years. They deserve the faithful performance of their allies. They deserve better than Poland got from its mutual defense alliance with France and Britain at the beginning of WW2. This move would insure they got it.
