Some things to look for on the power strips. You want to look at what is known as a surge let through factor, that means when they hit the device with the IEEE ringwave test (6000 volts) that is how many volts it allows to pass through (lower the better). Also make sure, as with any electrical device in the US, it carries UL Approval, not "designed to UL specs". Also the surge warranty means that APC has faith in its products, and they have paid on claims where electrical energy has passed through and destroyed or damaged hardware. The warrany isn't hype, its for real.

Just in case you might want to know (some electrical trivia here) why they only use 6000 volts to test electrical devices, its because that is the breakdown voltage for home wiring, above that point the wiring simply vaporizes.
