Tim, first off the world doesn't divide things quite as succinctly as you do. If Iraq wasn't happening, then Germany would not have to be defending Turkey. That's the way they see it.

True but irrelevant to the fact that they have a treaty obligation to defend Turkey. Not that a lot would be needed from Germany but Germany blocked even having NATO do the planning and preparation for any possible defense of Turkey. It didn't say "plan it without German soldiers", it blocked it completely.

However, Germany came through with its missiles. There is a frantic game of international diplomacy and politics being played right now.

Secondly, Bush is being pushed to get a coalition together because we don't want to shoulder the cost of rebuilding ourselves. The truth is we really can't afford it.

What is your guess as to the per year cost?

See my post to HMALY.......I am estimating the war will cost upwards of $139 billion and I think that's a conservative estimate based on a 2 1/2 year time frame.....6 mos. for fighting and mop up, and two years for basic rebuilding.

My numbers are based on those provided by the Congressional Budget Office. And given the way things are going, I suspect we will bear the full brunt of those costs.
