Afghanistan was the Soviet's Viet Nam. It cost them dearly, and they found out, regardless of the value of U.S. support for the Taliban, that they couldn't win. The climate and terrain do not lend themselves to conventional battles, either in Afghanistan or Iraq, and certainly the Iraqis are not going to be stupid enough to engage American forces in the wide open desert.

This reminds me of an Army colonel I met in 1965, who was absolutely positive that the best way to defeat the Viet Cong was with tanks. He wasn't even aware that much of the area he thought was suitable for tanks was a mangrove swamp.
