I don't see a way out for Bush, and neither seems 'bullish' for stocks, except maybe temporarily.

War would equal perhaps boycotts and tariffs and selling of US assets.

No war might make the US look weak, again perhaps affecting the dollar.

If the US 'goes it alone', I think that could be a bit frightening, changing alignments, fall of NATO perhaps. who knows?

That being said I don't see a good way out...

Wild speculation, but what if Russia made a last hour deal with sadam where sadam and his family were granted immunity in Russia and Russian troops became the so called peacekeepers in Iraq with all the economic and Oil benefits that went along with that? It could be seen as a compromise within the UN as well perhaps…..

Seems like Putin might be able to outmaneuver and check mate bush for access to huge oil reserves- or perhaps I am out of my mind?
