Afghanistan was the Soviet's Viet Nam. It cost them dearly, and they found out, regardless of the value of U.S. support for the Taliban, that they couldn't win.

I think the SAM's we supplied the Afghan rebels were the biggest reason.

The climate and terrain do not lend themselves to conventional battles, either in Afghanistan or Iraq, and certainly the Iraqis are not going to be stupid enough to engage American forces in the wide open desert.

That's what the Iraqis did last time. Maybe they'll have learned from that experience and that'll help them. Maybe not. No one knows what will happen. I do recall a lot of forecasts of doom appearing in the media prior to both Gulf War I and Afghanistan.

I think whatever WMD's Saddam has been able to retain and/or develop are the biggest things to worry about. Much more than climate or terrain or where the Iraqi army chooses to fight.
