We're not going to know, in any serious sense, about the role the oil plays in this, to repeat myself, until we see the longer term consequences of the invasion or until much of the memoirs appear or, least likely, there is an Ellsberg. At least not know beyond the cliches such as its all about global oil, we're preserving it for the Iraqis, it's not about oil at all, etc.

For myself, I suspect oil motives are a big part of this on every nation's part. The US has a definite history here. I would not be surprised to learn that the French and the Russians also are all over the oil issues here.

But I'm not going to learn that with any degree of certainty for many years.
