Peace rally turns on Crean
By John Sheed
16Feb03

FEDERAL Opposition Leader Simon Crean was shouted down by anti-war demonstrators in Brisbane when calling for UN backing before an invasion of Iraq.

Police estimated that around 50,000 people marched through the city before attending a rally in the City Botanic Gardens.
Mr Crean told the rally that if Prime Minister John Howard truly favoured a peaceful solution he should be attending peace rallies instead of war meetings with United States President George Bush.

"I'm sick and tired of the prime minister's so called peace missions to Washington to talk about war," Mr Crean said.

"If he is genuine about peace he should be here."

Heat took its toll on the Brisbane rally with many anti-war banners being turned into makeshift sunshades.

The crowd turned on Mr Crean drowning him out with chants of "No War" when he said the only time any action should be taken against Iraq was with United Nations backing.

"This issue for me is about saying we won't back any attack on Iraq that doesn't have the United Nations backing and that I most strongly argue," Mr Crean said.

"I know that there will be people here today that will say there should be no basis (for war) under any circumstances.

"I say this to you disarmament has to be achieved if we are to secure peace," Mr Crean said, struggling to he heard above the chanting crowd.

One of the biggest parades in Brisbane in years turned into a logjam of humanity when it arrived at the Botanic Gardens and tried to get in through two gates.

By the time many arrived at the river stage most of the speeches were almost over, while others gave up and sought relief from the heat under trees by the river.

Democrats leader Senator Andrew Bartlett said while he was pleased to see Mr Crean at the rally he wanted to make sure the Opposition Leader received the message being delivered by the rally as he led a renewed "No War" chant.
