Actually, to be accurate, so that folks can remember more precisely, many of the more practical of the French helpers eventually retired in the Caribbean, thrived, multiplied, and born much fruits.

As to the killings back in the Republic, they were democratically sanctioned, and thus in the current US language, perfectly alright.
