yes, alinghi beat the kiwi's technically during the spinnaker run on the last leg downwind.
i think had the kiwi's maintained the same course that alinghi was on, alinghi would not have been able to overtake them. however, as it was alinghi caused the collapse of the kiwis spinnaker forcing them to jibe. but having said that, armchair sailors like me don't know diddly-squat.
i think too that the kiwis are at a disadvantage not having gone through the previous series to iron out all the kinks - they have only been able to race against themselves really in preparation for this final. having said that, as i posted to s2 the other day, i'm surprised that they didn't make sure their equipment could withstand anything the weather threw at them.
they are sailing in their own backyard, for crying out loud. water problems??? that should never have happened. it's as if this was the first time they sailed this vessel - you would have thought they'd have had it out in all imaginable conditions so that there would be no surprises. i can understand accidents happening, but taking on water is something else.
it looks like the combined experience of coutts and jenny butterworth syrup might be too much for the young kiwi team. but in this sport, you just never know.

btw clappy, i picked up some tea tree oil for my son - he has a cold too. it's not the magic potion it claims to be, but works pretty well in clearing his sinuses. i got it at our local health food store. |
