re: Slide 28 – GSM1x with WCDMA

This is a new slide which shows how GSM1x could work with WCDMA. WCDMA would be used in the major cities, using the 3G spectrum. In the less populated areas, GSM voice would run on 2G spectrum. In the areas in between, GSM1x would offer 1x/1xEV-DO in 2G spectrum.

==========

This is entirely bizarre.

I'm searching for why Q would dedicate any time or energy in promoting this alternative.

The service void they propose to fill is now the rational market for EDGEfantasies...

If EDGE (a conceptually far less expensive option) has prospects of performing at all like its promoters profess, why would any sane 3GSM carrier complicate matters with an additional regulatory struggle and another air interface?

And if carriers were sufficiently motivated to petition for regulatory change to include cdma2000 technology in existing spectrum, why not blow off the capacity/coverage/performance challenged wCDMA entirely for cdma2000 at 2.1ghz?

This is entirely bizarre.

One might stretch and wonder if this is a subtle Q clue to the status of EDGEfantasy progress and prospects...

As EDGE would have to be not just floundering - but DOA - for this to make any sense.
