Here is a true story showing a parallel between Viet Nam and Iraq. When I was working as a foreign aid official in Indonesia in 1964, I had access to a great deal of classified material and also to those advising President Johnson, who had just replaced Kennedy after the assassination.

Johnson met with his advisors to discuss the Viet Nam situation. Most of them told him that a full scale war could not be won by the U.S. because we were backing a government in South Viet Nam that had no popular support. The advice Johnson received was to negotiate a face-saving way to withdraw. When Johnson heard this advice, his reaction was immediate: "That ain't the way we do it in Texas."

Draw your own conclusions.
