I was actually going to post that Friedman column myself, in a contrarian sort of way.

Well said, Win. Friedman puzzles me right now. I wonder if there are intense cross pressures working on him; if he is actually as confused as his columns appear to be; or if something else is going on. I thought this one lost its way in thinking he could lecture the Chinese on the reality of their need for US markets.

Very strange.

Having said that, I keep reading him. When he was good, as in his Beirut book, he was exceptionally good. But his globalization book was weaker. This recent stuff is weaker still. Something's wrong.
