So far, established players in the handset and wireless chip market such as Nokia and Texas Instruments have shrugged off the threat, although they are smart enough not to dismiss it. The question is for how long.

U.S. chip giant Intel Corp. made a breakthrough last week by selling a new cellphone chip to Asian electronics manufacturers including MiTAC, Wistron, Maxon, Ningbo Bird, TCL and Legend.

Local manufacturers in China, the world's biggest mobile market, every month gain one percentage point market share on their home turf, said Arthur van der Poel, a board member of Philips Electronics, the world's number four chip supplier.

It gives chip makers a tighter grip on the handset industry, because Chinese producers are looking to buy key technology.

``Chinese manufacturers don't want a chip. They want an entire solution including hardware and software,'' van del Poel said.
