It's funny though... up until WWII the French weren't considered cowards, their military failures more often resulted from foolish attacks. For instance Agincourt, where they could have used their cavalry advantage to flank the British, or just moved back out of bowshot and forced the desperate Brits to leave their picket line and attack, but instead they charged directly at the barricades. They made the same mistake at other times in the 100 years war. In early WWI battles they stood up and just charged across no man's land. Stupid, but not cowardly.

So what changed? Suggestion: they knew that during the Nazi occupation they largely collaborated in the murder of the Jews. They didn't care for the Jews, so they kept their mouths shut. Now they're dealing with a lot of suppressed guilt. Pretending their cowardice is "pro-peace" is one way to deal with that guilt.
