Why is that? I think when a country is invaded we ought to show up as a world community. If we go it alone it looks like imperialism, and the perception is the reality, so if it looks like imperialism, it is imperialism. Thus we should OFTEN do something- but with the rest of the world standing with us.
I also think some consistency is in order. I don't know why some countries should be deserving and others not. I also have stated that I don't think it is the job of the world to interfere in civil wars- too messy, unless you can get some sort of crimes against humanity justification.
The US is very dependent on the rest of the world. We COULD alienate everyone, but you have to ask yourself, why? It's fine to alienate people you don't need, but we need the rest of the world. All our stuff, our glorious stuff, almost all of it comes from somewhere else. Whether you like it or not, the US is inextricably bound to the rest of the world. It might behoove us to realize that, and act more prudently. It's not about appeasement, it's about being sensible, and honoring our allies, and the citizens of the world. Iraq is not ours to dispense with. The UN made the resolution we so zealously want to enforce, and the UN should decide how we proceed. If we steam roll over the UN we pursue a very shortsighted course of action, imo. |
