Hi Alastair - Some remarks:

(1) I do not understand your allergy to the term "student" - He was a post-graduate student. And that is not a degratory term as far as I am concerned.

(2) His work was based on outdated figures (of about a decade). I hear you when you say it was published some months ago, but that does not change that fact that it was based on ancient data. The guy says this himself:

His major sources were captured Iraqi intelligence documents from prior to 1991 that are part of Harvard's Iraq Research and Documentation Project, as well as books and public information.

Marashi, who has never been to Iraq, told Reuters he was surprised and flattered that his research ended up in a British government dossier -- but could have provided the government with updated information if anyone had asked.

and described by his editor as highly accurate, insightful, original, and extremely timely.

Do you know why it does not change a thing if his editor calls it "the new Bible" sent to enlighten all mortals in the wisdom of the US/British world view? Because it does not change the fact that British Intelligence PLAGIARISED a post-graduate student's report based on 12-year old data for the most part, grammatical & spelling mistakes and all, and passed it as their groundbreaking intelligence report that supported the US/British view. That was LOW. Very LOW.

The political opponents of the U.S. are desperately searching for any possible criticism of Powell.

I would not worry about it. Powell's speech (not "Powell" personally) was such a target-rich environment that the plagiarised student's report was just the icing on the cake.
