The US cannot bluff about war. There is no turning back. Saddam is likely to stay right where he is. If he does, then the US must invade because the level of bellicose chest-thumping leaves no option. There is no question about that. The ONLY question has been, from the beginning, about the price we will pay. And the way the US has played its cards has maximized the cost of war. We have all but destroyed the goodwill we enjoyed after 9/11. In dollars, deaths, future vulnerability, our leadership standing in the world, and in our national security, the policies of the US under Bush have taken us down the most expensive path we could have followed. Cheer all you like -- but this is a mess.
