"The operations of FASB are a total mystery to me. "

As they are to me. I'm not an accountant and I have no interest in becoming one.

MBAs and marketing types have long been on the fast track to the top in American companies. Beginning a couple of decades ago it became more common for _lawyers_ to be elevated into high corporate positions, largely because legal issues dominated the corporate landscape. Now it is becoming more common for _accountants_ to be moving up.

I fear for American technology when EEs and ChemEs and physicists are left down in the trenches so that MBAs, marketing types, lawyers, and accountants can run the companies.
