"You've already said, if I'm not mistaken, that you are accepting of the cave idea."

Yes and I said I saw some similarity. I also pointed out that there are significant differences that allow me to accept the cave idea. You skirted past that and declared them the same.

"And I think that is a sound basis in and of itself for my POV on assisted suicide. But I also recognize that you and others don't buy that principle so I also appeal to you on the basis of compassion for the hopeless and suffering. That doesn't seem to carry much weight, either."

Well the principle driving your argument is a significant basis for balking at any conclusions that may be drawn. I am willing to factor in a different founding principle in consideration of the hopeless who is incapacitated and suffering but you have to be willing to treat them as completely and distinctly different as well. I don't know what that principle would be but as I suggested at one point looking at the hospice approach as a starting point might be helpful.

For example, if someone is suffering and incapacitated with no hope for recovery, could their pain and awareness of suffering be treated at a point of neutralizing the complaints. No pain and/or no awareness of it? If this were their request would that be do-able and a tolerable condition? Why or why not?
