That is a fair offer. At least as a reasonable first step. I don't like it because people still have to exhaust their resources, but at least they're not suffering day to day. However, it's terribly hard on the relatives who would have their grief attenuated by a protracted vegetative state, but then not everyone has relatives. It would enhance the range of options and that's a good thing.

As a practical matter, one might be able to get around the problem in the current environment. I am not familiar enough with such things to know if this would work or not, but I understand they currently offer self dosing pain meds. Maybe one could complain vigorously of pain, get hooked up to the machine, and then simply OD. If course, that wouldn't work for someone who did not have the capacity to articulate complaints about pain.
