the threat has been there a very long time... Iraq itself being an artificial construct dating from British colonial rule... prior to that, it was attached to the Ottoman Empire for a couple of centuries.

The Kurds are the largest ethnic grouping in the World without a country. Nationhood is certainly their goal, war or no war.

The Turkmen and Kurds in Iraq will surely clash over the oil wealth as Saddam's rule collapses.

The Shia - 50%+ of the Iraqi population - also have no desire to be ruled by the minority of Sunnis... and may seek accomodation with Iran.

Over all that... tribal loyalties tear at the unifying principles of Iraq too....
