The larger the API gravity, the lighter the oil.

Heavy crude is around 18, gasoline is 60, asphalt is 11.

At 41, the oil contains more gasoline, naptha & kerosene and less gas-oil and residues than an oil with a lower API gravity. These are the more desirable (profitable) components of oil.
