My impression is that NATO now serves the purpose of sharing responsibility for national security among allies who wish to belong to an increasingly intertwined world. Perhaps we'll have to takes steps back from globalization after this war, but the direction has been towards a global economy, and towards nations and cities of increasing cultural and ethnic diversity. NATO provides a stage upon which many countries can cooperatively pursue policies which best provide security both collectively and individually.

As for the UN, they at least facilitate diplomacy; the fact that diplomacy involves drastically different viewpoints of morality and fairness is no surprise. You mention immoral nations as part of the UN. I'm sure there are members who feel the US is among the more immoral members, and we may be rightly accused of setting a poor example of our Christian values as we "take revenge" on citizens of other countries whether we're certain of their guilt or not. It's very difficult for nations, let alone people, to live by the golden rule, and no government or nation is perfect. Including ours.

Religion is a powerful force which is frequently taken to extremes, and I'm afraid that we are equating our efforts to end terrorism with the requirement that we wage a religious war. What a terrible idea.
