My brker reported huge gain to IRS when MERGER occurred - HELP! do I have to pay cap gains tax on this?
Here's the details... I owned 503 shares of Dime Bancorp when they merged with Washington Mutual last year. Waterhouse informs me that WM told them to report a $2049.17 gain on 1099-b, and they did. But at the end of the line on the 1099-b form it says "merger". Do I need to report this as a capital gain? If not, how do I report it so it doesn't look like I'm just ignoring it? Is there a way to write it back down? Please help!
