I agree with you. If you look at the situation in Iraq in a vacuum, war is at least as moral as sanctions, as they've been implemented, and much more likely to be effective. In a vacuum, Iraq then would be very much like Afghanistan. I favored the action in Afghanistan.

If you take away the vacuum, though, there are a couple of differences. One is that the bad guys in Afghanistan were a conspicuous threat to us and we were acting in self defense. The other is that there was an adequate international consensus for action. Failing those two factors, we look like arrogant bullies, at best. While I feel for Saddam's victims in Iraq, I'm hard pressed to identify any good reason why action on their behalf is warranted while we are ignoring the rest of the SOBs of the world and their victims.
