WEEKLY CHAIN STORE SALES SNAPSHOT
29-Jul-97 Schroders (KRISTIANSEN/HARRIS 212-492-6431-64)

Wal-Mart ($63,"2" Rated)
Above plan for the week, driven by strong performance in both the discount stores and clubs. The recently announced closure of 48 underperforming Bud stores will result in a $48-$50 million pretax charge in 2Q ($0.01 EPS impact). Despite the charge, the company remains comfortable with the consensus estimate of $0.35, including the charge, and therefore also with our estimate of $0.36, excluding the charge.

Discount Stores
Same-store sales gains were above plan for the week and month to date. Seasonal categories such as air conditioners, fans, and water toys continued to perform well. Other strong categories included electronics, photography, basics, pharmacy, food, pets, and horticulture. Auto and shoes significantly improved.

Sam's
Above plan for the week and at the lower end of plan for the month to date. Traffic remains strong. Leading categories included fresh, particularly food, health and beauty aids, luggage, and housewares. The strongest performing regions were the Southwest and the Southeast.
