In tireless (if pointless) web researcher mode, I tracked down the original source yesterday:
2F32: 'Round Springfield
* Grounds-keeper Willy greets his French class by saying, "Bonjourrrrrrrr, you cheese-eating surrender monkeys!" . citizenlunchbox.com
That would be end of season 6, late 80's / early 90's I think. (oops, correction, first aired 30-Apr-95 , snpp.com , allegedly available on kazaa even. ) Meanwhile, the first google hit today contains this:
Indeed, since the inception of this column, I have been adhering to Al Bundy's immortal fatwah, "It is good to hate the French." I have made The Simpsons-derived epithet "Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys" an accepted term in official diplomatic channels around the globe. nationalreview.com
Er. the allegedly blandbutmarvellous objected strenuously to my pointing out the Bundy connection out in #reply-18589069 , but early adapter Goldberg is apparently not nearly so troubled. It's not surprising that Goldberg made this connection, Married with Children used to come on right after The Simpsons on Sunday night. BBM can go eat Velveeta or processed cheese food or something, he'd probably find said substances more to his taste. |
