dipy,

re:Hamas

Hamas:
Hamas has its origins in an organization called the Muslim Brotherhood which was formed by Palestinians in the early 1920s in Mandatory Palestine under British rule. From the MB
came a man named Sheikh 'Izz al-Din al-Qassam, who began a guerilla movement in the 1930s and was killed in a clash with British troops. This began the first Palestinian
liberation movement under the guise of Islamic resistance.
In 1967 a man named Sheikh Ahmad Yasin became the leader of the MB in the Gaza strip. Yasin was charismatic, an Islamic scholar, and an organizational master. Yasin was
behind the geographical expansion of the MB and institution building of the organization. During the 1980s the MB began to form capabilities of armed struggle in order to gail
political influence. Hamas was originally founded in 1987 as the military branch of the MB in Palestine under the leadership of Yasin. As Hamas grew in strength and membership,
moving MB focus from individual spiritual life to national action in the political sphere, it co-opted the founding movement. Hamas then became both an organization for political
action and for education, welfare and community life.
