Reading the article in the WSJ this morning about National Semiconductor -Cyrix, it appears that their target will not be the $1000 computer, but a $500 computer. The ony way they can do this is to use a chip like the Media GX integrating multiple support chips (audio, video etc) with the microprocessor. The downside of this approach is that rapid improvement becomes more difficult, and you can't rely on partners to help make improvements. I don't think NSM plans to attempt the upper parts of the PC market. AT $500 even a semi brain dead PC could have a good market. It could do word processing, internet connect, some games etc. This merger is not bad news for Intel. Once people are exposed to even a $500 computer, they will want something better .
