Men 'tried to export' missiles to Iraq

TWO German nationals, one of Iraqi origin, have been charged with attempting to export missile parts to Iraq, a prosecutor has said.

The two have been in custody in the city of Bielefeld since the end of last month.

Investigating magistrate Eckhard Baade told the ARD television channel the two were suspected of attempting to export some 2,000 electronic components to Iraq via a third country.

"We don't know what type of missile the components were intended for but the Stinger missile was mentioned," he said.

During a house search police investigators had found plans for missile guidance systems, the official also revealed.

According to a report in the forthcoming edition of the news magazine Der Spiegel on Monday, one of the accused, a 63-year-old German, ran an armaments company at Steinfurt in western Germany.

He was reported to have attended an international industrial fair in Baghdad last December, when he was approached to export military material to Iraq. His associate was described as a 49 year-old German of Iraqi origin.

One of the first companies contacted over the proposed deal reported the matter to customs authorities in Cologne, Der Spiegel said.
