JohnM, are you sitting down? I'm going to agree with you. Pollack (and Bush & co) are arguing for regime change, while Mearshimer and Walt and arguing for stability. Each argument is coherent in itself and depends on ones interpretation of a whole slew of supporting data. I don't find M&W compelling, but I can respect the argument.

However, the anti-war marchers are a different kettle of fish for the most part. It is very hard to figure out what the intellectual glue is, that unites arguments for human rights with arguments for leaving Saddam alone, if it is not anti-Americanism. It is certainly not a sober comparison of the likely results of the war against the likely result of leaving Saddam in power.

To quote Mark Steyn's latest column,

How far are the "peace" crowd prepared to go? ...In fall 2001, being pro-gay and pro-feminist didn't stop the left from defending an Afghan regime that disenfranchised women and executed homosexuals. Yet these are the same fellows who insist that a secular regime like Iraq's would never make common cause with Islamic fundamentalists, apparently requiring a higher degree of intellectual coherence of Saddam than of themselves.

If you can come up with a better explanation of why these anti-war marchers believe that America's actions (and Israel's) are so desperately their business, but the Taliban and Saddam deserve to be left to their own devices, please, have at it.
