I too believe that if a peaceful functioning secular Democracy can be produced... the whole exercise will likely be worth the cost.

... But make no mistake: the expense will be great, and multi-year.

I don't believe anyone has been honest with the American taxpayers about this yet, and I know that the administration's budget documents and proposals have been disingenuous on the matter.

As to "removing US troops from the muslim holy lands" that is likely to happen in a post Saddam environment (the Saudi's have already made the decision to ask us to leave), but I doubt that will save us any money... as we will be constructing bases to project the same military potential from Iraq, so there's no cost savings there.

I guess the money we've poured into Saudi Arabia is a 'write-off'.
