Motorola Awarded $43 Million Contract by India's Tata Teleservices for CDMA 1X Network Deployments

Motorola's (MOT) Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) has been awarded a $43 million contract by Tata Teleservices for deployment of a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 1X network in the Indian cities of Maharashtra, Mumbai and Goa. The CDMA 1X network is designed to provide customers data services at speeds of up to 144 Kbps in addition to regular voice services. The deployment is scheduled to be completed by May 2003.

"Tata Teleservices is enhancing its basic telecom services portfolio by providing wireless Limited Mobility to its customers. We are already well entrenched in South India and recently launched CDMA based services in Delhi. We are now focusing on strengthening our presence in Western India to establish formidable presence in CDMA-based Wireless Local Loop services. We opted for Motorola as they have the requisite expertise, experience and significant presence in Asia Pacific in CDMA network deployment," said S. Ramakrishnan, managing director, Tata Teleservices.

This contract further strengthens Motorola's CDMA leadership in Asia Pacific. Motorola has been in the forefront of CDMA deployments in various countries including China, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and India.

Motorola deployed India's first CDMA network in Madhya Pradesh for Bharti. Its achievements also include the deployment of the world's first commercial CDMA system in the world in Hong Kong in 1995, as well as the development of a nationwide CDMA 1X network for KDDI that is among the fastest growing networks with more than five million subscribers since its launch in April 2002.
