New Delhi: A consumer body today sought telecom regulator TRAI's intervention over "unfair trade practices" allegedly adopted by two major limited mobility operators.

The body said the operators were forcing customers to buy overpriced handsets exclusively from them or their own vendors.

"Some operators of WLL (mobility) services are harming consumers and competition by forcing customers to buy overpriced handsets exclusively from them or their own vendors," Consumer Co-ordination Council said in a recent letter to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

"This is a clear case of Unfair Trade Practice," the Council, which claims to be the national coalition of 50 consumer organisations, said.

The council has sought the immediate intervention of TRAI in this matter saying "till it is not settled, the sale of the package should be stayed and the amount collected from the consumers should be returned with interest."

The Council claimed that the marketing practices adopted by WLL (mobility) sellers were monopolistic in nature and misleading to consumers.

"By insisting that their subscribers buy handsets from them alone, WLL (mobility) operators are collecting at least Rs 2000 as premium from the sale of the handsets," the council has alleged.

Reliance officials said the company had not put any restrictions on consumers, although handset brought by consumers would be activated only if it met system specifications of the network.
