Ted, <Better yet what makes you think the Iraqis are ready for democracy?>

So you don't believe Iraqis are ready for a democracy. That's a very high-minded, arrogant position to take.

Oh excuse me......but I'm arrogant? Have you asked the Iraqis what they want? Do you always presume to know what's best for someone else? I know you think so with the Koreans. Don't you think that's a bit arrogant? Is this an example of calling the kettle black?

Democracy is one of the most difficult forms of gov't to get to flourish. It takes a lot of hard work and a lot of luck. And this country is one that should know. We came into being at a time when the world was much larger and we were left pretty much to our own devices. We lucked out in that we had some visionaries who dreamed an incredible dream, and then went about trying to make it real. And we had a bounty of natural resources and a relatively benign climate neither too hot nor too cold. We are probably one of the most blessed nations in the world.

And yet this democracy almost went down so many times its a miracle we did survive. We should have lost the War of 1812. The Civil War should have torn us apart. We should have had coup d'états when our presidents were struck down by assassins......it happens in other countries. So many times our military was poised to intercede but they didn't. In the end, the Republic and the flag were respected and they endured.

So don't talk to me about a democracy in Iraq. In spite of the fact that England was a monarchy, the early colonists had some sense of what a democracy is and experienced some form of self rule. Iraq has never ever had any form of democracy except for their mockery of a national election where Saddam gets 100% of the votes. The nations that surround her are either theocracies, monarchies and/or dicatatorships........not a fertile ground for democracy. The inter regional squabbles and fighting are legend and have gone on for centuries. There is a major problem with the ethnic Kurds who number in the tens of millions; who are sprawled between three countries including Iraq, and who are at war with each of those three countries.

How farfetched is it for the US to walk in there, bomb everything and then set up a parliament and ouilà! the Iraqis have instant democracy. So please chill with the arrogant word......its inappropriate in the context of what I said.
