Actually the Northern front is important, or could be. I haven't been following the weather but rivers should be in flood and a lot of the ground for southerly approach marshy.

And a northern front forces the Iraqis to displace more of their forces.

But yeah, the US can do it without the Turkish approach but it could make things more difficult.
