Yes, they are stopping fights much earlier. A good referee knows when someone is no longer capable of defending themselves from the possibility of extraordinary injury. It is amazing how far people will push their limits in trying to win.

Do you remember Bobby Baun scoring the winning goal on a broken leg? Or Johnny Bower lying unconscious from a puck in the head (I wonder how many of those he stopped like that?!) and then getting to his feet, skating across the crease a couple of times, and setting down his stick to signify readiness to play! And wasn't it incredibly moving just a few years back when that young female gymnast did the Olympic vault with a sprained ankle. Incredible courage!
