The ONA Group has been present in mining since 1928. Aware of the potential in the sector, it brought together its mining equity investments under Managem, so as to optimise all the skills and know-how.
Today, Managem consists principally of 5 mining companies, a processing company and two service companies. In September 1999, as part of its international activity, Managem signed a partnership agreement with the Canadian mining resource company Semafo.
This alliance should, in the long term, enable it to become a significant gold and base metal producer in Africa, particularly in Mali, Guinea, and Niger.
Currently, they are primarily a big zinc and silver producer:
"SMI (Société Metallurgique d'Imiter) has mined the Imiter silver metal deposits, to the east of Ouarzazate, since 1969. Its high tech production process results in silver metal bullion 99.6% pure. It has an annual production of 300 tonnes of metal, destined for export"
