russett,
If Pennsaid is used on broken skin you get a greater chance for systemic absorption which defeats the lotions purpose, so skin irritation must be closely
The labelling would preclude this. I do not see any difference to this and any other med where side effects deemed it had to be stopped. This all is hinged on the user following the instructions -- as it does with all meds.
2)I still do not understand how one gains approval for any med that is intended for long-term use under the present system. Seems to me that it would be impossible.
I listened to an add last night on TV for a new oral asthma med -- intended to be used for long-term -- and the list of potenital side effects was frightening. Very serious potential side effects, including heart arrythmias and all sorts of others things. Clearly the message was to discontinue use and see your doctor if these occur. Now there are lots of meds for asthma and I do not believe that this one was a great leap in treatment technology, so I have to wonder about the logic that was used to approve this one. Seems to me there is a double standard.
3) Would the trials, which are designed to see what happens in a "real Life" situation (as best they can, understanding the limitations of trials) not give the reviewers some sense of problems due to misuse? That had to be a question they would ask since it is so obvious. I recall it being said that there have been no serious side effects in all of the people tested. That would include (and perhaps I am wrong) any mishaps due to improper use, in particular any absorption of other unwanted chemicals. Surely after the hundreds of people (thousands?) who have used Pennsaid, if mishaps due to absorption of deleterious chemicals was going to occur we would have seen at least one of these. Further, I know that for DMSO to carry any chemical through the skin, it has to have the right polarity and not be that big -- I suspect that would preclude many chemicals that are of concern.
I guess the bottom line here for me is, it seems a confluence of factors all have to come together at the same time for there to be a potential mishap. Not impossible, but if people follow the instructions, not likely.
I have to run now, but will continue at some point in the next day or so.
