Trai recommendation on more cellular players soon

PTI
[ THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2003 04:00:58 PM ]

NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is soon expected to submit to the Department of Telecom, its recommendations on adding more players to the cellular sector, although it would take into account the issue of spectrum availibility.

"We will shortly come out with the recommendations on adding more players in regard to the cellular sector. The recommendations would take into account the issue of availibility of spectrum," a senior Trai official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The official, however, pointed out that the existing players in the Indian cellular sector had not received as much spectrum as made available internationally to operators for same level of subscriber base.

"The consideration by Trai, while framing the recommendations, would be that if the spectrum is available, then the open competition in the sector cannot be stopped," the official said.

At present there are up to four cellular operators in each circle in the country, although the issue of addition of players has surfaced time and again over the past few months.

Last year, the then Communications and IT Minister Pramod Mahajan had said that he had visualised a scenario with fifth and sixth operator in the sector.
