Hi, Doug. Thanks for your reply of July 5th. Today may be a good time to continue remarks about embedded memory, now that National has bought Cyrix, with the express goal of producing a 'system on a chip'.

My impression -- they want to make a cheaper machine, allright, but not a low-range sealed box. In effect, they hope to eliminate the current boxes with an 'Intel Inside' sticker. Perhaps someone has more information of this point.

As I understand the technical point, one can easily make a fast memory by the embedded route, since there is no 'pin-out' problem...one can have a wide interface.

Also, the engineering of the next generation of Rambus technology may take awhile:

techweb.com

The last two paragraphs of the article claim that no one has yet solved the latency problem. As a follower of Ramtron's technology, this strikes me a classic example of conventional wisdom. Rambus and ESDRAM simulation models available from Virtual Chips , e.g,
phoenix.com
are said to show that the ESDRAM concept, which should appear early next year, is faster than the current Rambus setup. It will be only 16 Megs, but at least the principle will be demonstrated.

Regards, Logan
