What I learned in school was that with Social Security, the government takes part of your paycheck, puts it away until your retirement, then pays that money back to you as retirement benefits.

Of course, reality struck and I later learned what a myth that was. Now it's just a handout program, the Ponzi scheme that you correctly point out, but no politician has the courage to.
