They have the cable cars there, right? Yep. The only way of safely handling those steep hills when the system was built. Those hills still make for, ah, exciting driving these days. One slip of the foot on the brake and you're into the car in front of you. Not fast enough on the gas after stopping and you roll back into it.
The terrain and the harbour must give it lots of character... San Francisco as a port is dying. Unions. They fought first containerization, then automation, and the business slipped quietly across the bay to Oakland. And the piers are largely on the eastern, inland side of the city which is not the prettiest view.
The view looking north is spectacular. The deep blue water of the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, Sausolito, small Richardson Bay, and Tiburon on the other side of the water, and Angel Island and Alcatraz.
The bay in that area is pretty windy. And chilling cold. They only sea level entrance to the hot Central Valley. I used to sail and race on it. Brrrrrr! |
