There were some issues, specifically of moving info from intelligence to law enforcement and back, which were addressed by the Patriot Act. And the everything including the kitchen sink. On the flip side - FBI computers can serch for FLIGHT or SCHOOL but not FLIGHT SCHOOL. Somthing very wrong here folks. A CIA/DOD project called Oracle solved that problem a few yeaws back. Later became a major corporation... By the way, post 9/11 Larry Ellison offered to help provide software for tracking terrorists. This was dismissed as grandstanding by Larry. DOD used it to track signatures of Soviet ships, aircraft , etc. THe FBI memo out of Arizona pointed out the problem and danger of Saudis in Flight Schools - this was ignored. The FBI could not get into the hard drive of the guy in Minnesota because US attorney did not want to violate privacy. Arline execs have stated that when they got previous warnings from the CIA (a few years ago), they got names , dates, etc. and were able to deter risky passengers from boarding. When the airlines got warnigs for the FAA on some of the same people, when the potential terrorists were in the US, they recieved vague information and NO Names. The political correctness jerks stopped one on the profiling systems that would have flagged about half the 9/11 hijackers. A close inspection at the gate might have stopped at least one hijacking. As for the INS...needs to separate into enforcement and bookeeping/ tracking/ rules. Joke is too kind a word.
