Perlegen lands another one:
>>MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Perlegen Sciences, Inc., a privately held genetics company, announced today that it has signed a multi-year research collaboration with Unilever (NYSE: UL - News) under which the two companies will utilize Perlegen's proprietary high-resolution whole genome association technologies to develop new consumer products -- that better meet consumer needs. Perlegen will receive research funding, research success payments and royalties on consumer product sales. In addition, Perlegen will retain rights to develop potential therapeutic products based on the research results. "We are proud and excited to partner with Unilever so that genetics can impact a wide range of consumer products that people use every day," said Brad Margus, CEO of Perlegen.
Spun off from Affymetrix, Inc. (Nasdaq: AFFX - News) in 2001, Perlegen is accelerating the development of therapeutics and diagnostics through high-resolution whole genome scanning.
Perlegen recently used DNA chip technology to sequence 50 complete haploid human genomes. This allowed the company to identify over 1.7 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), the locations where the DNA sequence of different individuals vary. Perlegen is now able to analyze these locations in the DNA of thousands of individuals accurately, efficiently and rapidly to discover genes that are responsible for differences in the way people age, respond to products, and experience life. This knowledge can lead to new product development and the matching of products to consumer populations.
Unilever was formed in 1930, is one of the world's leading suppliers of consumer goods in foods and home and personal products and had annual sales of approximately $46 billion in 2002. Unilever operates in 88 countries around the globe and employs approximately 265,000 people.
